Leave Entitlements
Topic Description
Taking time off work is sometimes essential—whether for rest, family commitments, or life’s major events. Maltese employment law recognises the importance of work-life balance and provides employees with a range of leave entitlements to support their wellbeing. Employers need to know what these are, and be prepared in advance to navigate them, such as to apply consistent practices, and avoid abuse.
The current list of entitlements contemplated by Maltese employment law are as follows:
- Vacation Leave (and paid national and public holidays)
- Sick Leave
- Injury Leave
- Urgent Family Leave
- Marriage Leave
- Paternity Leave
- Maternity Leave
- Parental Leave
- Carers’ leave
- Adoption Leave
- IVF Leave
- Bereavement Leave
- Court Witness Leave
- Jury Service Leave
- Quarantine leave
Employers must maintain accurate records and respect statutory thresholds to be able to demonstrate compliance.
