Mind Over Matter: Why Have a Mental Health Policy at Work?

13/10/2025

1. Clear Minds Need Clear Policies

A policy outlines how employees can raise mental health concerns, how managers should respond and offer support and what resources and adjustments are available. This will help employees feel more comfortable raising concerns, knowing that their superiors have standard guidelines on how to act and assist.

2. It Promotes a Supportive Culture

Having a policy shows that mental health is taken seriously. It encourages open conversations, reduced stigma and a culture of empathy and understanding. With the right training and guidance, managers can spot early signs of mental health issues, respond sensitively and appropriately and allow for reasonable adjustments to support recovery.

4. It Ensures Compliance

A policy also ensures consistency in handling related matters and provides the employer with a stronger position in the face of legal repercussions—provided the policy is properly followed. Importantly, a well-drafted policy helps employers meet their duties under the Health and Safety at Work Act and regulations thereunder, as well as best practices in general.

5. Wellbeing Means Business

Supporting mental health leads to:

  • Lower absenteeism
  • Higher engagement and productivity
  • Better staff retention and morale
  • Builds trust and psychological safety

A mental health policy is the foundation for a healthier, happier, and more productive workplace.
